“On October 9, 2021, the inaugural annual Funmi Afelumo Memorial Academic Award was presented to the best overall students of science at Providence Heights Secondary School in Lagos, Nigeria. The awarded students were the best in the U.S high school equivalents of 10th and 11th grades. The award, given to students at Funmi’s alma mater, provides the students with recognition of their hard work and 50,000 naira, which is roughly converted to $120.00 US dollars, to support them in their outstanding academic journey.
The science award was sponsored by Funmi’s parents Fatima and Folarin Afelumo. It will be followed by an award for the Arts and Commercial studies awards next academic session. The Arts and Commercial studies awards are sponsored by Funmi’s brothers, Foluso and Femi Afelumo, along with close family friends, Dayo Fadelu, Fisayo Fadelu and Jubril Oyeyemi, who are all alumni of Providence Heights Secondary School.
Funmi, a toxicologist and plant ecologist, always had his nose buried in a book. Education and the pursuit of knowledge filled Funmi’s soul. A curious and analytical mind, learning and exploration fueled Funmi toward many adventures in life. His memory and spirit will live on through these awards, supporting and encouraging students to pursue their academic dreams.”
Thank you to Emily Lawson and Jubril Oyeyemi for sharing.
